Seeing Red "hanging there in your face!"

True Alisandre, BA, LMT (4/19/00)

It just dawned on me today, that a 'red light,' is a red flag for me to "get angry" cause it's interfering with me getting somewhere important. Also, it represents the authority figure that I've been combating all my life; trying to be free of it in whatever forms it presents itself. There's that inane blaring red circle hanging in my face, taunting me to "control myself." No wonder I 'see red' so much in my mind and get angry at the drop of a hat. How many 'red lights' have I been subjected to over my lifetime of 55 years? Probably thousands have demanded me to sit tight, and not budge a muscle of my car's metal over the finish line (otherwise called a pedestrian crosswalk.)

Maybe, if we looked on the red light as something else, like a reminder to slow down, relax, create something, or possibly just entertain a spontaneous thought, we'd see less red in our mind about 'it doing something to us?' Recently, I've been guided to implement a practice after a red light changes to green. Instead of rushing off to a roaring start like some Philly drivers before the light even finishes changing to green, I'm now sitting still, and inhaling one full breath of air, and on the exhale, I slowly push down on the accelerator pedal, and off I go. So far, no one has blasted me with their impatient horn, and I am mindful of the tendency I have to sometimes go slow as a turtle when someone is behind me, "egging me on to speed up."

I have come across another realization of late about the types of toots we give to our fellow drivers, and I sure want my share of "courteous / welcoming honks" rather than 'irate blasts' from ones who want me to: "get out of their way!" Let's see what we can do to come up with some more uses for the 'good ole red light' and our cars horn instead of another opportunity to "see red & go ballistic!"
